This is Jean Baptiste Camille Corot's "Le Lac," painted in 1861. This oil painting, currently on display at the Frick Gallery, is one of my favorites. It's an interesting juxtaposition: hyper-realistic detail, especially that large leaning tree on the foreground (the photo isn't that great, unfortunately), combined with the blobby, impressionistic splats of paint that represents the leaves/boughs of the tree behind it. It was bizzare and eye-catching and really very interesting.
I think that one of the reasons why this particular painting caught my eye was because it exhibited in a room with very typical, high-realism style landscapes that used very glossy colors and saturated tones. Then you see this painting with its somber shades: but the painting is oddly bright despite Corot's use of muddy tint.
Show us an unforgettable memory from 2006.
I turned 30 on April 28. So, to celebrate, we went whitewater rafting on the 29th - a double run on the Lower New River in West Virginia. I highly recommend Appalachian Wild Waters, and ask for John as your guide. The double run at Lower New meant that it was all whitewater, all the time. We rafted down the Lower New once, had lunch (food never tasted so goooood), then went back and DID IT AGAIN. The longest stretch of quiet was maybe 3 minutes worth of lazy paddling. Then we'd hit the rapids. When we went, it was mostly Class IV rapids, so that meant a lot of trying not to pee oneself or fall out of the raft.
It was the BEST way to spend a birthday, ever.
Sorry for the shit pics - they're from the website. I ought to buy a couple of the prints, but damn, I'm a cheap ass.
P.S. I only know how to doggie paddle. I have to say that the fear of drowning added to the thrill.

I love Renaissance art - particularly portraits. It's such a cliché, but Da Vinci is a favorite. I love his anatomical studies, and his portraiture. *swooon*
But my other favorite will have to be Amano Yoshitaka ( 天野 喜孝 ). I fell in love with his FF designs, of course. Then I saw his designs for Arslan Senki (アルスラーン戦記 ), his work on Vampire Hunter D, Gatchaman, and then his work on Neil Gaiman's Sandman story, The Dream Hunters.
My love became an obsession. I have a lot of his books - filled with absolutely stunning, dreamlike, haunting, nightmarish work. He's a fucking genius.
